BMAF Spring 2008 Tour

BMAF Convention Tour          February 11, 2008

This 7 Day Tour is priced at $1,400 per person double occupancy (single occupancy can be arranged) and includes:
4 and 5 Star accommodations (Marriott Hotel and Amatique Bay Resort–
www.amatiquebay.net).
Visits to the archaeological ruins of Copan and Quirigua.
3 full meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner included all days).
Rio Dulce and Snorkeling.
Book of Mormon lectures from LDS scholars and archaeologists.
First class, air-conditioned motorcoach ground transportation.
Interior flight from Puerto Barrios to Guatemala City.

An optional pre-tour add-on is also available.  This 3 day, 2 night pre-convention tour will include Chichicastenango, Antigua, and Lake Atitlan. Additional cost is $500 per person.  Tour is offered through Bountiful Travel.

 

Daily Itinerary:

Day 1 (Monday) - Flight into Guatemala City. Your BMAF hosts will be waiting for you at the Guatemala City airport to transfer you to the luxurious Marriott hotel.

Day 2 (Tuesday) –  The adventure begins as we fly from Guatemala City to the magnificent ruins of Copan in Honduras. The ruins of Copan are a tranquil oasis of ancient culture and sublime nature nestled in the foothills of western Honduras, just 7 miles from the Guatemala border. For years, Copán has been renowned for its magnificent Maya Ruins, a designated World Heritage Site believed by archeologists to be the cultural center, the Paris, of the Maya world. After touring the ruins, we will return to our rooms at our luxurious nearby resort. (B,L,D)

Day 3 (Wednesday) -  After breakfast, we will return to Copan to visit their amazing museum and tour the underground tunnel system. Then, we will transfer by bus from Copan to our resort near Puerto Barrios, the Amatique Bay Resort. In the evening we will participate in informative lectures from LDS scholars and archaeologists about the areas that we are visiting.  (B,L,D)

 Day 4 (Thursday) - This adventurous day begins with a transfer to the pier in Santo Thomas. From Santo Thomas, we will take a scenic ride down the majestic Rio Dulce. This ride includes stops along the way to see the locals fishing and living along the banks of the river, a stop at a maya co-op for those who would like to do a little shopping, and a stop at some hot springs. The river ride concludes at Lake Izabal where we will have lunch and then tour the Castillo San Felipe. From there, we will head to the ruins of Quirigua, made famous by the 19th century adventurer and author, John Lloyd Stevens. Following our time at the ruins, we will visit a neaby banana plantation and then return to our hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 5 (Friday) -  Friday we will have the opportunity to learn more from our accompanying archaeologists. Morning and afternoon sessions will be split up with free time. For those who would prefer, a group will go out to the islands for a snorkeling adventure. (B,L,D)  The resort offers a variety of activities including swimming in the beautiful pool that has a pirate galleon and castle with interactive water games and slides and water volleyball; or relax on the beach, play soccer or volleyball. For the adventurous, the resort offers ecological tours to paradisiacal places where you will find iguanas, turtles, butterflies, lam pen, geese, peacocks, a tree nursery and an ecological path with migratory birds.Aquatic sports such as kayaks and wave runners are available as is horseback riding.

 Day 6 (Saturday) -   Today we return to Guatemala City. Upon arriving, we will tour the Miraflores Kaminaljuyu museum. Time permitting, we will visit other museums, the ruins of Kaminaljuyu, the huge relief map of Guatemala or the LDS temple. We will be staying at the Marriott hotel. (B,L,D)
