GRIJALVA VS. USUMACINTA

"In 1980, one of F.A.R.M.S.' first projects was a slide show entitled "Lands of The Book of Mormon." The script identified Mesoamerica as the setting for the Nephite record, but was purposely ambivalent on the issue of the Grijalva or the Usumacinta as the River Sidon. Now, nearly 30 years later, we are in precisely the same position. There is general consensus among all serious Book of Mormon scholars that Mesoamerica is where the scriptural history took place, but both the Grijalva and the Usumacinta rivers have vocal cheering sections who sometimes advocate their respective positions with more zeal than knowledge. If we could settle this one geographical identification, it would go further than any other single issue toward resolving the conflicting Book of Mormon geography theories currently extant. I applaud The Book of Mormon Archaeological Forum for their bold attempt to shed light on this divisive question."  - Kirk Magleby
